Comment Spam Manifesto

By Marc • Dec 31st, 2004 • Category: the Site

If you couldn’t tell, I’ve had a lot of trouble with comment spam since starting this WordPress site. While I’ve pretty much stopped the spam using Authimage, I know they’re still trying. I am sure I get hits everyday that are spam attempts that Authimage throws in the trash.

Marc calls Ayn Rand Institute “stingy”

By Marc • Dec 31st, 2004 • Category: In Other News...., the Ranter

I just read this press release from the Ayn Rand Institute.
From the press release:
The United States government, however, should not give any money to help the tsunami victims. Why? Because the money is not the government’s to give.
Um……..HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s why they’re called our “elected officials”, because we elected them by a majority [...]

Vandals play Baghdad

By Marc • Dec 31st, 2004 • Category: For the Troops, Pop Culture

I just read this news story on Yahoo news about the Vandals playing Baghdad. That’s pretty cool! I can remember the good ole days listening to “Anarchy Burger” and “Safe Suburban Home”. For those of you that don’t know, the Vandals is a punk rock band minorly famous in the 80’s (not [...]

Everyone else is blogging about it, so why shouldn’t I? I saw this first about a week ago. Now it’s cropping up on every tech savvy blog and news site out there. Click on more to see what you do to make Firefox a faster browser…….

Just when you think you have it bad

By Marc • Dec 31st, 2004 • Category: In Other News....

Lately I’ve been whining and moaning about all the trouble and expense we’re going to have to go through to make Suzette’s immigration status here permanent. At this point, I’ve spent about $600 in filing fees for USCIS (formerly INS) paperwork. It looks like we’re going to have to pay at least another [...]

Jose Rizal day

By Marc • Dec 30th, 2004 • Category: The Philippines

Today is Jose Rizal (pictured at right) day in the Philippines. He’s pretty much a national hero there and if you read about him, you can see why. So, if you see any Filipinos today, wish them a happy Rizal day!

bbPress

By Marc • Dec 30th, 2004 • Category: the Geek

Matt’s announced the new bbPress forum software. It’s been created with the WordPress philosophy in mind. While I don’t really have a use for forum software here, I am thinking about converting a couple of other sites I run to WordPress. One of them really needs forum software, so this would be [...]

By Marc • Dec 29th, 2004 • Category: Pop Culture

It’s a sad day today in that we’ve lost a wonderful actor. Jerry Orbach, most famous for roles in the TV show “Law and Order” and the movie “Dirty Dancing”, lost his battle with prostate cancer today. We love you Jerry, you will be missed!

Site update - Comment SPAM…again!

By Marc • Dec 29th, 2004 • Category: the Site

Well, since it looks like the trencaspammers plugin has holes big enough to drive a Mac truck through, I’ve managed to switch back to Gudlyf’s Authimage plugin. As far as I can tell, it’s working fine. I’m gonna get to work on hacking the plugin itself to change the colors to something more [...]

UPDATE on UN calls US ’stingy’

By Marc • Dec 29th, 2004 • Category: In Other News....

Mr. Egeland now says he did not mean imply the US or any other country was “stingy”. In the long run, it doesn’t really matter who gives the money. What matters is that the money is available for the people who need it. That’s the point that Mr. Egeland seems to be [...]

The UN calls the US ’stingy’…

By Marc • Dec 28th, 2004 • Category: In Other News....

Some guy in the UN’s humanitarian relief agency has called the US’s pledge to send $15 million in aid “stingy”. While this figure does seem a modest sum considering the wealth of the US, I’m sure this figure will increase as the government assesss the need. Meanwhile here in the US, the various [...]

Yushchenko Declares Victory in Ukraine Election

By Marc • Dec 27th, 2004 • Category: In Other News...., Politics

It looks like Yushchenko has won the election in Ukraine. This is a victory for freedom and major stumbling block for Putin who is obviously trying to rebuild the Soviet Empire. Long live freedom and democracy!

Tragedy in southeast Asia

By Marc • Dec 26th, 2004 • Category: In Other News...., the Church

Like Jimmy Akin, I ask for everyone to pray for the people of India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. They’ve suffered a terrible tragedy. Please pray for those affected, especially for the repose of the souls of the dead.

What is AP thinking????

By Marc • Dec 25th, 2004 • Category: In Other News....

AP has a story out there with the headline”YMCA Chief Fired for Transgender Ball Flap”. What are they thinking? With the vast vocabulary of the English language, couldn’t they have come up with a more “proper” headline than this? Here’s the story at Yahoo News.

I just wanted to say to everyone a Merry Christmas. I hope everyone here in Memphis and everywhere that got hit by “winter storm ‘04″ is safe and happy. Finally, a warm holiday greeting to all the J.T. Price clan out there reading.

Nanoblogger, doing things the old school way

By Marc • Dec 23rd, 2004 • Category: the Geek

Forget about all the that PHP and Perl stuff we use on our blogs, this blogging engine doesn’t use any of that fancy hocus pocus. It uses bash. That’s right, the bourne again shell, plus awk and grep and stuff like that.. While I think it’s cool that someone has done this, [...]

There’s a lot of upset people in the River City today

By Marc • Dec 23rd, 2004 • Category: River City, Sports

University of Memphis (formerly Memphis State University) lost 52-35 at the GMAC bowl in Mobile last night. Is it just me, or does that sound more like a low basketball score than a high football score? Read all about at Yahoo News here and at the University’s website here.

By Marc • Dec 22nd, 2004 • Category: the Church, the Geek

Well, I have officially made a fool of myself over at Jimmy Akin’s blog. I hope someday I can make a recovery and go back out into the world of blog commenting…..

Bad weather

By Marc • Dec 22nd, 2004 • Category: River City, the Ranter

OK. Here in Memphis the weather is horrible right now. It’s been sleeting since about 1200 and it’s right around 1632 now. The roads are slick and visibility is poor. When my director came through telling people to go home and work the rest of the day from home, I took [...]
