My personal Phishing stats so far….
By Marc • Dec 6th, 2004 • Category: the GeekCNet has a story on Phishing scams. I just thought that it would be worth mentioning that since I reset the statistics on Popfile Sat Nov 6 at 21:30, I have received 123 emails into my “mort-spam” bucket. This basically means that I’ve gotten 123 of these emails in a month, almost to the hour.
The vast majority of these emails were “from” SunTrust bank. Some of them were also “from” Regions bank, Bank of America and various credit card companies. I even got one that was “from” Paypal. Of course I have accounts with none of these institutions (expect paypal – thicke @thicke.org, if you want to make a donation to help pay the up keep of my blog – It won’t be tax deducible). I don’t even think most of them don’t even have branches in Memphis. I put the “from” in quotes course, because these email did not come from these financial institutions. They came from very evil , selfish people, the lowest of the low, the kings and queens of lamers. These people are in severe need of salvation, or else they’re going to spend eternity burning at the end of pitchfork. Be sure to pray for them, if you do that.
The emails tell you that you need to confirm your information with the bank and provide a link to fill out a form. A lot of them have been real clever to make the link look like it’s legit. In MS Internet Explorer, it will even look like it’s bank’s web address , because of a flaw in IE that will hide of the address. The form you’re asked to fill out will ask for all kinds of personal information, including name, SSN, account number, mother’s maiden name, favorite pet’s name, etc…..
The lesson here is to never fill out this information on a web page after getting an email asking you to do so.
