Bad weather

By • Dec 22nd, 2004 • Category: River City, the Ranter

OK. Here in Memphis the weather is horrible right now. It’s been sleeting since about 1200 and it’s right around 1632 now. The roads are slick and visibility is poor. When my director came through telling people to go home and work the rest of the day from home, I took it as a blessing. It was a blessing until I got on the road. I am so sick and tired of people driving like idiots in bad weather. A little ice, snow or rain does not give you carte blanche to drive like there are no traffic laws. Not that people in Memphis obey traffic laws when the weather is sunny and warm. But when the weather gets bad, Memphis drivers’ disregard for common sense gets worse. First off, it’s Tennessee state law that you turn on your headlights when you have your windshield wipers on. Not only is it law, it’s a really good idea. I don’t really care if you can see, that’s not the only purpose of headlights. They also help others to see you. HM…Makes a lot of sense now doesn’t it? Also, you should not enter an intersection unless you’re sure that you can exit the intersection before the light turns red. Hanging your tail end out in an intersection after is what’s called contributing to gridlock. I waited and could not move through two green light today because some selfish person was blocking the intersection. Another thing that would be nice for people to do is use their turn signals. You paid for it when you bought your car, why do you let them go to waste? They say communication is the key and that’s what turn signals do. They communicate your intentions to other drivers. If I know you’re about to change lanes to my lane ahead of me, we’re a whole lot less likely to bump into each other. GAAAHHH!!! I could go on and on. But I’ll stop for now before I pop a blood vessel. Besides, I should enjoy the blessing of being home right now while the weather outside gets worse.
