Straczynski doing Star Trek???
By Marc • Feb 16th, 2005 • Category: In My Mail, Pop Culture, the GeekOn an emailing I was on I posted this link to an article at SciFi about JMS writing a treatment for a new Star Trek show and the possibility of him pitching it to Paramount for production.
Here the two replies:
That would be cool. I think the franchise does need a breath of fresh air, so to speak.
That one I can mostly agree with, although I think Enterprise was getting a breath of fresh air in the form of Manny Coto. This season has by far been the best and getting into some interesting territory with regard to the Star Trek mythos.
The next reply sent me into a state of negativity that is rarely seen….
I too would like to see this happen. Given the B5 series, it could make for an interesting TREK series. If this flies, hopefully he use the ship and crew from the New Frontier series of Star Trek books.
I kind of went off a little:
NO! NO! NO!
You can’t just take some book series and make it into a TV show. You run in to a situation where you’d have to either have to do one of three things. First, retell stories in the book in order to properly develop the characters, which would alienate some of the people who have read the books. Second you could develop the characters with new stories that are different form the books, which would also alienate folks who have read the books. Finally you could just pick up where the books left off, which would alienate the people who have not read the books. Either way you run the risk of alienating potential fans. Besides, if you read the article, it says that Straczynski and the other guys have already written a treatment for a proposed show. Since Enterprise has been on the air for four years, it logical to assume they wrote this as their version of the next show after Voyager. So their treatment is potentially four years old too.
I’d like to add too that JMS’s talents would be wasted on such a treatment of the franchise. Just my two cents…..
