Brothers in Arms is working now!
By Marc • Mar 22nd, 2005 • Category: the GeekDown there a ways, I mentioned I got an error when trying to play the game “Brothers in Arms”. Here’s what I said:
I clicked on “play game” on the little control panel that runs when you insert the CD. I get a message saying “Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application”.
According to Ubisoft’s website, they put some pretty fierce anti-piracy protection in their games. The most common reason for getting the error I got was because of writer software for writable optical drives or “virtual disk” software for the same drives. Well, after going through my task manager process by process, I finally found the process “dla.exe”. This is part of a software package put out by Veritas that basically makes your writable optical drive look like a hard drive. I wasn’t able to kill the process, so since I never use that feature anyway I just uninstalled the package. After a reboot I was playing the game.
I’m not real happy with Ubisoft for this. They’re basically assuming the worst of everyone and convicting anyone who has such a software package installed of piracy. I’ll probably not be buying any more of their games.
UPDATE: This post is getting A LOT of hits from Yahoo and Google. If this solution works for you, please leave a comment saying so. If something else works for you, leave your solution too. You never know, it might help someone else.
