Base closings
By Marc • Jun 15th, 2005 • Category: In Other News...., the RanterHere’s a story about the locals near Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska trying to keep the base open. I hate to say this, but these bases have a purpose which is not to provide the community around the base with an economy. The purpose is provide services in the area of national defense. In these times of shifting threats with the cold war over and the new war on terror beginning, if you can’t read the witting on the wall that a an air force base in Alaska is no longer needed, then it’s your own fault if you haven’t put a contingency plan in place to protect the economy of your community in case that base closes. The US military does not exist to keep the economies of local communities alive, they exist to keep the people of local communities alive (and safe).

I dunno about this one. The article makes it sound like our last line of defense from Canada. However, keeping this base for polar air routes shorter to Russia/Korea makes a LOT more sense than having a Navy base in Millington, TN
There are plenty of Air Force bases in Alaska. Plus, Eielson is built on a fault line, so it’s kind of unstable anyway.
