Mac OS X update and Safari is broken….Well, fixed for now…

By • Jul 12th, 2005 • Category: Mac OS X, the Geek

OK….I let software update (or is it “iUpdate”?) install the newest update for Tiger (takes it to 10.4.2) as soon as I got home from work today. The first thing I did after the update and reboot was go into my NewsFan to check the days feed. I clicked on a link and BAM! Saft popped up with a dialogue saying the version of Saft I was running was not compatible with the new version of Safari that was installed with the update. Now, it was nice of to offer to disable itself, but it was too late. Safari was already locked up. I was sure what to do at this point. I couldn’t get into Safari to turn off Saft. Well, I ended up moving the files that make up Saft. It seems to work fine that way and I hope Mr. Li will have a new version of Saft out to fix this. In the mean time, if anyone wants to do what I did, the Saft folder I moved was located Library–>Input Managers–>Saft. Just move it to your desktop. Of course keep in mind that I am a relative newbie to the Mac platform and this might not be the best way to fix this problem. It just worked for me, that’s all. ;)

Please feel free to leave comments with other solutions or thoughts.

For those of you who don’t know what Saft is, it’s sort of a plugin for the Mac OS X browser “Safari“. It It adds a lot of cool features like crash recovery (returning all you tabs to the sites they were displaying when Safari crashed) that I just missed from the ol’ Firefox.

UPDATE: This has been fixed by an update of Saft. Thanks to Mr. Li for getting this done so quickly. I just can’t live without my Saft. :)

  1. Did you just do a full reinstall? Did you lose any saved windows? I can’t find anything about updating on the Saft site to answer my questions.

  2. Well, I sort of did a reinstall. I deleted the files for Saft as mentioned above (Library‚Äì>Input Managers‚Äì>Saft) until the update was put out. You shouldn’t have to do that though. All you should have to do is grab the newest version and install. If you’re a registered user, you can get it here, just enter you information. If not, the demo is here. And yes, the install script shuts down Safari, without asking “are you sure?” or anything. I lost all my open tabs when it shut down, but Saft also not running when it shutdown. YMMV.
