Palm, RIM ink licensing deal

Handheld computer makers Palm and Research In Motion inked a deal on Monday to let Treo 650 owners to connect with BlackBerry e-mail and calendar software.
The option will be available for new and existing Treo 650 users as well as future Treo products with the Palm operating system starting in early 2006. Carriers, pricing and distribution deals will be announced at a later date, the companies said.
I think what’s happening here is that RIM is getting worried about their hardware because of the recent patent infringement suits against them. They have to have a route to go if their hardware suddenly becomes unmarketable for some reason or another. I think they’ve found a great way to do that. Since Ia m not a big fan of the Blackberry when compared to the Palm hardware, I am happy to see this. I am hoping maybe my employer will switch.

Don’t hold your breath. Palm has already got up and shown this technology off at last years symposium–saying it was just months away. This is just a repeat of some false hope from last year…. I’ll believe it when they announce it happening in weeks–not months.
