Last allied witness of WWI Christmas truce dies
By Marc • Nov 21st, 2005 • Category: For the Troops, Prayer for the Dead“LONDON (Reuters) – The last known surviving allied veteran of the Christmas Truce that saw German and British soldiers shake hands between the trenches in World War One died Monday at 109, his parish priest said.”
Alfred Anderson was the oldest man in Scotland and the last known surviving Scottish veteran of the war.
When I think of the conditions these men lived through fighting in the trenches, I can’t help but think of them all as heros. It must have been Hell on Earth. To come out of those trenches and into the jaws of death took a courage I can not even imagine. These were special men and it sad to see their light go out in this world. Alfred Anderson is just one of the men that answered the call in that day. May he and all the veterans who have pasted on rest in peace.
Eternal rest grant unto them oh Lord. And may perpetual light shine on them. May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
