According to SciFi Wire, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe came in first in box office receipts this weekend (67 million…WOW!).
Suzette and I braved the Mall crowds on Saturday to see it. We both gave it two thumbs up. I found the special effects impressive. [...]

By Marc • Dec 10th, 2005 • Category: Prayer for the Dead

MUNICH, Germany – Cardinal Leo Scheffczyk, a conservative theologian who due to his age did not participate in the conclave that elected
Pope Benedict XVI in April, has died, his office said Friday. He was 85.
I didn’t know anything about him until reading his obit, but he sounded like a good man…

What do they mean? Catholic leaders divided on banning gay priests

By Marc • Dec 10th, 2005 • Category: Catholic stuff, the Ranter

Response to a recent Vatican document barring men with ”deep-rooted homosexual tendencies” from studying for the priesthood underscores how divided Catholic leaders in the United States remain on the subject of gay priests.

No it doesn’t. What it shows is that some of these “Catholic leaders” are faithful to the Church and some are not. [...]

The creation of Mama Mary

By Marc • Dec 8th, 2005 • Category: Catholic stuff, the Church

Today we celebrate the feast day of the Immaculate Conception. This does not celebrate the conception of our Lord as some people mistakenly think it does. It celebrates the conception of His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. What is mean by Immaculate is that her conception was made pure by God so [...]

By Marc • Dec 6th, 2005 • Category: Marc

Well, it’s all over the Catholic blogosphere that today is the feast of Saint Nicholas. But there’s something the other sites aren’t telling you. It’s something you’ll only read here at Wild Tangents.
Saint Nicholas is better known to the rest of the world as the inspiration for Santa Claus. Saint Nicolas is [...]

Why criticize the Vatican for being Catholic?

By Marc • Dec 5th, 2005 • Category: Catholic stuff, the Church

I just read an excellent editorial on the recent homosexuality and the priesthood thing that everyone is yelling about even though they never read the document.
IN RESPONSE to the Vatican’s ban on allowing practicing homosexual males to become priests: It is easy to label Vatican agents as liberal or conservative. However, religious leaders [...]

And what Al Sharpton wants, Al Sharpton gets. I have to admit though that this is not a [...]

Erotic moments from Bible?

By Marc • Dec 5th, 2005 • Category: Satan Laughs, the Ranter

BERLIN (Reuters) – A German Protestant youth group has put together a 2006 calendar with 12 staged photos depicting erotic scenes from the Bible, including a bare-breasted Delilah cutting Samson’s hair and a nude Eve offering an apple.
This is just sick. These people ought to be ashamed of themselves.
I’ve seen some of the [...]

LONDON – A 162-year-old Christmas card – one of the first ever printed – sold at auction Saturday for $16,000.
The hand-colored card, which shows a family celebrating around a table, is one of about 10 surviving from an original batch of 1,000 printed in 1843, auctioneer Henry Aldridge said.

By Marc • Dec 3rd, 2005 • Category: In Other News...., the Ranter

“In 2006, it’s going to be immigrants — that’s who he is going to scapegoat next,” Dean said of Bush. “Once again, the Republicans create a problem so they can think to come in and solve it.”
I just asked Suzette if she felt like a “scapegoat for the Republicans”. She doesn’t think so….

Bad review of “New World”

By Marc • Dec 2nd, 2005 • Category: Pop Culture, the Ranter

It sounds like Terrence Malick has yet again quit his seclusion from Hollywood to make a rehash of his other movies.
However: in most ways “The New World” is surreal, slow, confusing, choppy and just plain weird. I mean this in the best way — it’s really interesting filmmaking. But it’s also psychedelic and kooky.
That was [...]

Why I’m glad I’m not a Bellsouth customer

By Marc • Dec 2nd, 2005 • Category: On The Web, the Ranter

It’s because they hate their customers.
According to the Washington Post, a BellSouth executive yesterday told reporters and analysts that the telco should be able to charge certain websites more if they wish to be accessed by customers more quickly. BellSouth CTO William L. Smith also told reporters BellSouth should be able to charge VoIP carriers [...]

Two new TV show titles on DVD just in time for Christmas

By Marc • Dec 1st, 2005 • Category: Pop Culture, the Geek

OK….OK….I know Serenity is a feature film. But it’s based on a TV show so it still counts right?
Anyway, both of these are going to be released on Dec. 20th. If any needs some ideas for what to get me, they’re right here.
